Ahh Buenos Aires! What a great city! We loved it! There´s so much to do that it´s very difficult not to stay as least a week. Hmmm..where to start...Well we familiarized ourselves with some of the city by going on a bike tour. Buenos Aires is composed of many different neighborhoods from La boca, the poorest neighborhood to Palermo and Recoleta, ritzy places filled with sheek boutiques, to the watefront with some of the most expensive, modern apartments. The city might as well be in Europe because of the overall feel and architecture. So many of the traditional restaurants reminded me of Paris. The food, mainly steaks, was out of this world and the shopping is ridiculous. Anyone like leather?
Some of our highlights were watching a football game-Argentina vs Bolivia. Even though Agentina kicked their butts, it was fun to be part of the crazed crowd especially when Argentina scored their 3 goals. We also went to the oldest and most well known cafe in Argentina called Cafe Tortoni where we watched the most incredible tango show. It was so sensuous and beautiful that you could cry. Wow!
We visited a wacky Sunday market in San Telmo, which was mostly an antique market but then thrown into the mix were these boothes with people dressed up not really selling anything. There were transvestites dressed up in like genies, monks, hillbillies, you name it, it was like halloween. Pretty interesting to see, to say the least. La Boca was also a really cool neighborhood filled with colorful buildings and football paraphenalia galore (Boca juniors).
Another crazy incident that we witnessed was the day before in a shopping area of Buenos Aires. Just as we were leaving a store we saw a man slam into a woman in her 50´s, after which he tried grabbing her purse. The woman just started screaming and hanging on to her purse for dear life, as the guy kept yanking to get her bag. The woman fell to the ground and was getting dragged along the sidewalk. We walked out at the exact second it all started and it was happening right in front of us. As we walked out of the store we both went straight towards the situation. It happened so fast, that everything was kind of all in one motion, as the woman was on the ground and the two of them were a little bit separated (both still hanging onto the bag) Levi cross checked him slightly, enough for him to release her purse..meanwhile I was screaming! It was horrible. She had just came from the bank and he obviously followed her. We were all pretty shook up. Nothing like a bit of adrenilin during the middle of the day. Needless to say it was hard to shop for anything after that.
On the day we were leaving Buenos Aires, we made a split minute decision to head to Colonia, Uruguay by boat instead of another small Argentinian town. One hour later, we were in Uruguay!
